Busted my most valued drawing finger trying to grab a lazy rebound while playing ball at lunch. Here’s to a speedy recovery!

I have to give a big shout out to Hulu for bringing back so many good memories. Dragonball and Sailor Moon are at pretty opposite ends of the anime spectrum, but both of them were formative experiences for me as a young lad.
I’m sure in some weird way, they shaped some of my ideas of what Japan is like. It has been a lot of fun to go back and rewatch these series on Hulu after my experience living in Japan and studying Japanese in school. In a lot of ways they look kind of dated, but mostly I’m impressed with how well they both hold up.
If you haven’t added them to your queue, you should avail yourself of the opportunity! I have to give a big shout out to Hulu for bringing back so many good memories. Hey, boys and girls! Sorry for the radio silence; my family and I are just bouncing back from several weeks of illness. No fun.
What was even LESS FUN was that after 3 weeks of not doing any personal drawing, I had found myself in the most terrible CREATIVE SLUMP.  It was hard for me to get motivated, and the longer I stayed not drawing the harder it was becoming to sit down and make some pictures.
I’m sure this has never happened to any of you though.
A couple of nights ago, I decided it was time to break the streak, so I sat down to power through my slump. It was really uncomfortable, but I was pretty sure that squaring my shoulders and just making some drawings was the only way I was going to break free of the mire I was in. “MAKE SOME DRAWINGS,” seemed like the sort of advice I would give to someone else in this situation, so I decided to take some of my own medicine.
These 10 or so pages are the drawings that I made in a couple of hours two nights ago. This is a pretty naked look at my sketchbook. Frankly, I’m not in love with most of what came out on the page, but I thought I’d share all of it here with y’all. I hope anyone else who’s stuck will sit down and crank something out. It doesn’t have to be amazing, sometimes you just gotta get your engine running again.
Hope to be back on the road soon. See you dudes and dudettes out there! Hey, boys and girls! Sorry for the radio silence; my family and I are just bouncing back from several weeks of illness. No fun.

You know that feeling of being torn between two projects you want to pursue, and not knowing which you want to do first?
Yeah, me too. You know that feeling of being torn between two projects you want to pursue, and not knowing which you want to do first?

Did your tv have rabbit ears when you were a kid?

I used to watch the Andy Griffith show on a tv like this when I was younger. When we got a color tv, the Andy Griffith show was still in black and white but other shows miraculously appeared in color. It was more than a little bit confusing to my young brain.

rachel-be-libby asked:

Hello sir! I've just been accepted to BYU, and I'm wanting to try out for their animation program! I looked at the line up of classes, and now I'm am TERRIFIED. The work load looks like it would be incredibly hard and I might not be tough enough to survive it! I don't know if you went to BYU, but I'm assuming any animation school would have classes similar in subject and difficulty. How hard were they for you? How did you set up your schedule so that you could manage all that work?

A

I DID go to BYU, and it was amazing! You are going to have an incredible time. Any college course schedule will be busy to varying degrees, but the animation course load was extra-super busy (probably because the results are less objectively gradable…also because at BYU you’ll have your academic core courses in addition to religion courses).

Work hard, but don’t lose perspective. If you spend all your time making cartoons, you’ll miss out on life!!

You seem like such a great dad. I love it.

Thanks so much. I’m a dad who’s making it up as he goes…that’s probably most dads. :)

Paperboy for #Sketch_Dailies. I’ve been meaning to find time to participate in their prompt-a-day thingy for a little while now.
Thought I’d follow in the steps of my good buddy, Aaron, and try this flipbook style, even though it’s not #flipbookfriday.
Hope everybody’s good!

Anthony! Thanks for the follow on twitter! :) Your stuff is super inspiring to me, so it means a lot! I admire how you can balance family, work, personal work so well! just wanted to write you hear to avoid the character limit. Cheers!

A

Ha! I’m still trying to figure that twitter thing out. Balancing life and work is really difficult for most people, I’m sure. I try to do my best—thanks for the encouragement. It really means a lot!

Q

eec10 asked:

Hi Anthony, you have come up with yet another awesome animation! I tried to figure out what program you had used with the Abracadabra file, but couldn't decide on if it was Flash or Photoshop. Also, do you ever rough out your animations or you just go on a whim? It's so inspirational for me to see you updating so often, with pieces of incredible quality. Just want to say THANK YOU!!

A

I drew that one in Flash, and then exported it from Photoshop. Most of the animation I do for fun involves very little planning, since it’s just for personal fulfillment. I have to do enough tight drawings during the day at work, when it’s time to draw for kicks I just kind of go with the flow!

Q

ercanbozdogan asked:

Hi Anthony (or do you perfer mr. Holden? ;) ) You've probably been asked this question a gazilion times, but have you, by any chance, made a tutorial on how you do your gif's? Which program you use, how you export etc etc. I made a gif recently, but could'nt upload it here on tumblr. And when I tried to make it smaller, it lost so much quality that you almost could'nt see what was going on. I used a bitmap based program called TVPaint. Hope you can help! Thanks in advance!

A

I’ve been meaning to get my hands on a copy of TV Paint. Do you love it?

Formatting gifs for tumblr is super tricky. There are a couple of things that I have figured out.

1) it likes your gif to be either 500 px or 250 px wide.

2) there’s a bunch of mumbo jumbo about sizes up to 1 or 2 megs, but I try to keep stuff under 500k, and that tends to avoid hiccups

3) it won’t let you post gifs in excess of 110 frames (at least I haven’t had success posting anything longer than that).

I do my exporting from Photoshop where I can get a real-time estimate of the final size of a gif. Lowering the resolution and number of colors in your palette are the two options that seem to have the greatest effect on file size. Of course sometimes this makes your content unrecognizable, which is why you see folks splitting things up into gif sets.

I usually just make gifs in black and white or very few colors. Hope some of this helps!!

Many moons ago when I was doing boards on Mr. Peabody and Sherman, we had a brainstorming session where I tried to throw out some helpful ideas on who in history the duo could visit. I suggested a version of the story where Sherman would have to gather seven magic balls in order to have his time traveling wish granted. But I guess that was just not meant to be.
Oh well. Dear everyone,
I’ve finally joined the modern age, and bought a twitter bird. Let’s see how long I can ride it until something irreversibly terrible happens.
